PCR stands for post-consumer recycled material, which is recovered after a product has been used by consumers and enters a recycling stream. PCR Packaging incorporates such material into packaging where the material quality, processing requirements and end-use conditions allow.
PCR use is not suitable for every application or every layer of a package. Selection should consider recycled-content documentation, performance, appearance, regulatory requirements and the intended use. Any claim about PCR percentage or environmental benefit should be based on verified data and a clearly defined calculation method.
• Incorporates post-consumer recycled material where suitable
• Recycled-content level based on confirmed specifications
• Packaging format and structure assessed by application
• Performance and appearance evaluated during material selection
• Documentation and traceability considered for recycled-content claims
• Regulated applications require specific compliance review
PCR material may be considered for selected non-food-contact packaging, outer packaging or other applications where the material grade and regulations permit. Food-contact, pharmaceutical and medical applications require a separate assessment of applicable regulations, material documentation and intended use.
To assess a PCR packaging project, provide the intended use, target PCR content, package format, performance requirements, product-contact status, destination market and any certification or traceability requirements. The final specification should confirm material grade, recycled-content percentage and supporting documentation.
Kaida Packaging has packaging-material and flexible packaging capabilities and can discuss the feasibility of PCR-related applications. The appropriate PCR content and use case should be determined through technical review, material availability and compliance verification.
